One more reason to use "cool" metal roofs
The typical Malaysian terraced house receives most of its solar heat gain from the roof. This is because the horizontal surface receives the highest solar radiation, peaking at about 350 Wh/m2 at mid-day in the tropical sun and it continues to receive the highest solar radiation level throughout the day. Add to that the higher ratio of roof to building envelope area; the typical roof receives from 50% to 85% of the total solar radiation as shown in the table below.

Single Storey Terrace

Double Storey Terrace

Five Storey Flats

Eight Storey Apartments

Gross Floor Area

Roof/Envelope Area

Reducing the solar heat gain through the roof should therefore be the first priority for keeping the home cool.

For sloping roofs, you should implement the following:

  • Use lighter coloured metal roofing or better "cool" metal roofing (i.e. solar-reflective metal roof).

  • Apply aluminium foil insulation under the metal roof to further reduce radiant heat gained by the roofing from being radiated to the ceiling.

  • Ventilate the loft area above the ceiling and below the roof. Measurements taken in this loft area have been found to go as high as 45 deg.C for outside air temperature of 35 deg.C for not insulated roofs.

  • Apply a layer of rock wool insulation immediately above the ceiling to prevent the heat from the loft area from being radiated and conducted into the living area immediately below the ceiling.

Malaysia Building Energy Consumption Stats
The energy consumed in buildings in Malaysia is 90% in the form of electricity. Buildings in Malaysia consume more than industry and transport combined.

Malaysia’s commercial and residential buildings alone, account for about 14% of total energy consumption and 53% of electricity consumption.

Looking at the above chart, cooling or rather air-conditioning consumes a large percentage of electrical energy consumed, be it home or office. With the threat of “Global Warming” and increasing energy cost, keeping the home cool will become increasingly important in the future. Any reduction in these costs through the use of energy efficient building envelope components certainly makes sense.

Why should you care?

  • Sustained growth in building construction is expected hence an increase in energy demand

  • Roof can be least energy efficient and least durable component of a building envelope

  • Cool metal roofing can help save energy and improve the environment

Factory Visit - SHAREDA
Despite it being a fasting month for the Muslims, Colourcoil Industries was proud to have a factory visit held in August. On 11 August 2011, we received an entourage from the Sabah Housing And Real Estate Developers Association (SHAREDA), led by its Council members, Y.B. Datuk Ir. Chong Hon Len and Mr. Johnson Koh, its Executive Secretary Ms. Salina Abdullah and other fellow members consisting of mainly developers.

We thank the group for their encouragement and support on our KOOL energy-efficient coated steel products. During the visit, they were presented with a brief of Colourcoil Industries’ business operations and products, as well as a guided tour of our compact infrared curing coating facility and quality control lab.

Being one of the driving force of sustainable development and an advocate of the Green Building Index (GBI) movement in the State, we definitely look forward to working hand-in-hand with SHAREDA in promoting the green initiative and increasing the overall quality of all pre-painted steel applications on buildings.
