COLOURCOIL
recognized as an ENERGY STAR® PARTNER
ENERGY
STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping to save
money and protect the environment through energy efficient
products and practices.
Colourcoil Industries is proud
to announce that we are the first pre-painted steel
manufacturer in Malaysia to be recognized as an Energy Star
partner. Hence all of Colourcoil's solar reflective
pre-painted steel products for the downstream manufacturing
of "cool metal roofs" are now
compliant to Energy Star's requirements.
What's in it for you?
-
ENERGY STAR® roof products reflect more of the
sun's rays. This can lower roof surface
temperature by up to 100F, decreasing the amount
of heat transferred into a building.
-
ENERGY STAR® roof products can help reduce the
amount of air conditioning needed in buildings,
and can reduce peak cooling demand by 10-15
percent.
Here's
proof that Colourcoil Industries is an
Energy Star® partner (Just type in Malaysia and

RADIATIVE PROPERTIES OF COOL METAL
ROOFS
In our
previous newsletter, we discussed about what cool
metal roofs was all about as well as how cool metal roofs
can help reduced Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. In a
nutshell, cool metal roofs are metal roofing products that
integrate materials with greater spectral reflectance than
their traditional, non-cool counterparts, and thereby
minimize the transfer of heat to the building below.
The two radiative properties that
characterize cool roofs are solar reflectance
and thermal emittance (see fig below). A cool
roof minimizes the solar heat gain of a building by first
reflecting incoming radiation and then by quickly
re-emitting the remaining absorbed portion. As a result, the
cool roof stays cooler than a traditional roof of similar
construction.

Solar reflectance (SR) is the ability of a
material to reflect solar energy from its surface back into
the atmosphere. The SR value is a number form 0 to 1.0. A
value of 0 indicates that the material absorbs all solar
energy and a value of 1.0 indicates total solar reflectance.
Energy Star requires an SR value of 0.25 or higher for steep
slope (above 2:12) roofing and an SR value of 0.65 or higher
for low slope (2:12 or less) roofing.
Thermal emittance (TE) is the relative
ability of the roofing material to re-radiate absorbed heat
as invisible infrared light (relative to a black body
radiator). This absorbed heat will either be gradually or
quickly re-radiated away from the roof; the quicker the
better because the longer the heat is trapped at the surface
of the roof the more likely it is to penetrate the building
below. Thermal emittance is also measured on a scale from 0
to 1, so a roofing material with a higher thermal emittance
will re-emit absorbed thermal energy more quickly than a
material with a low emittance and will result in a "cooler"
roof.
Solar Reflectance index (SRI)
Codes, standards and programs that
specify cool roofing requirements may also reference an
additional calculated value, the Solar Reflectance Index
(SRI). SRI allows actual measured solar reflectance and
thermal emittance values to be combined into a single value
by determining how hot a surface would get relative to
standard black and standard white surfaces.
The standard black roofing material has a high emittance
value (90 percent) but a low reflectance value (5 percent).
This creates a hot roof surface because even though the
emittance is high, there isn't enough reflectance to help
cool the roof. As such, the standard black roof is given an
SRI value of 0.
The standard white roofing material is highly reflective (80
percent) and has the same emittance as the standard black
surface (90 percent). Its surface is much cooler and the
standard white roof is assigned an SRI value of 100. Like
solar reflectance and thermal emittance, a higher SRI value
is synonymous with a cooler roof
To meet Malaysia's Green Building Index (GBI)
roofing requirements, a roofing material must have an SRI of
29 or higher for steep slope (above 2:12) roofing and an SRI
value of 78 or higher for low slope (2:12 or less) roofing.
Where are these SR or SRI values
published?
Obviously different colours on different substrates will
vary in SR or SRI values. These values are normally found in
colour charts published by roofing manufacturers and
manufacturers of pre-painted steel (i.e. colour coated
steel).

COLOURCOIL WEBSITE
UPGRADED
Colourcoil
website has just been upgraded to include the hot topic of
"Cool Metal Roofs". Our IT department would like to express
their gratitude to the R&D department for their assistance
in the layout and write-up for the Cool Metal Roof webpages.
In our opinion, Colourcoil Industries probably has the most
complete info on this subject from the viewpoint of a
pre-painted (or colour coated) steel manufacturer.
Please browse through our newly
upgraded website to learn how Colourcoil Kool
energy-efficient "Solar Reflective" roofing metal can
benefit you and the environment.

Technical Visit by IEM & ACEM (Sabah
Branch)
The Sabah Branch for both
the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and Association
of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM) held a factory and
technical visit to Colourcoil Industries at its headquarters
in Telipok, Sabah on 6th March 2010 (Saturday).
The team comprising of almost 40 professional engineer
members from the private and public sector was spearheaded
by Ir. Tang Koh Yon@ Tang Kok Yon, IEM Sabah Branch
2009/2010 Vice Chairman who is also an ACEM Committee
Member.
In-line with the Malaysia
government’s initiative to promote the practice and
construction of Green Buildings, participants were
briefed about Colourcoil’s newest and exciting range
of solar-reflective pre-painted steel products for
the downstream manufacturing of metal roofing. These
special pre-painted steel products are coated with
custom formulated fluorocarbon paint system which
have high infrared solar-reflective properties,
hence a high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) which
enables its application to contribute points towards
the building’s overall Green Building Index (GBI)
score. Combined with the advanced infra-red curing
technology, Colourcoil’s high performance
pre-painted steel finishes are now ‘as cool and
smooth as ice’.

We were delighted to announce that apart from
international affiliations such as being an
ENERGY STAR Partner, Colourcoil Industries
is now also a proud member of the national
Malaysian Green Building Confederation (MGBC).
Colourcoil has certainly come a long way and
we are now able to provide wider options of ‘green’
pre-painted steel products to local and
international professional consultants. Insist on
Colourcoil’s Kool energy-efficient
"solar-reflective" roofing metal to conserve
precious energy and save Mother Earth!
Colourcoil Industries specially thanks the IEM &
ACEM Secretariat for organizing the visit.
