OCT 2009

colours that last

Volume 4, Issue 4

Editor's Note

October is here and we are in the last quarter of 2009. To our muslim friends and readers, we trust that Hari Raya went well and that everyone is well rested from the more recent holidays.

We would like to take this opportunity to inform our readers that Colourcoil's Kuala Lumpur branch office will be moving to a new premise. The office will be located at Phileo Damansara I, next to Eastin Hotel. Our KL staff will certainly welcome this move as most of them as well as our clients are starting to find parking difficult around the old office. The new office is currently under renovation and if all goes well, our KL staff will be moving there sometime at the end of October.

In this issue of our newsletter, our committee would like to highlight to designers and readers, the problems that can crop up with the use of incompatible materials on colour coated steel roofing. We hope the article is beneficial and just to let you know, our R&D staff are continuously working hard to bring to you, more technical journals for your benefit.

Thank you.

BEAUTIFUL METAL ROOFS - Taman Seputeh, Kuala Lumpur
Located in Kuala Lumpur across from Mid-valley Megamall is Taman Seputeh. These new homes have a very modern look with very clean lines. The designer and developer have opted to use metal standing seam roofing as the pitch roofs are rather flat. With the standing seam metal roof profile, the new home owners can rest assure that they will live in homes that will be virtually leak-free for many years to come. (Standing seam roofs use special hidden clip systems that can allow for thermal movement of the roofing sheet. There are no visible screws, no puncturing of the roofing sheet, and each roof panels are seamed to the next panel using a special seaming machine).

GOOD DESIGN - Dissimilar (i.e. incompatible) Materials
Dissimilar materials or rather incompatible materials can be a disaster to a metal roof, so one must be aware of materials that cause problems. Dissimilar materials are materials which when placed in an electrolytic solution react with one another chemically. In simple terms, it’s when two pieces of metal get wet, and one causes the other to corrode.

Colourcoil Industries' primary substrate material used for colour coating is aluminum-zinc (AL-Zn) and galvanized (Zn) steel. The materials that cause us the biggest problem with these products are copper and lead. These two metals should not be anywhere remotely close to the colour coated Al-Zn or galvanized material we supply. Even a roof made of Al-Zn or galvanized material should not drain into a copper gutter. While once thought of as being acceptable, recent case studies have shown that the water hits the gutter and splashes upon the roof and causes corrosion. Other occurrences we see regularly on roofs are the use of copper lightning rods. Lightning rods should be made out of aluminum when used on a Al-Zn or galvanized roof. Drainage from an air conditioner on the roof is water that is dripping from copper coils inside the unit and should be plumbed off the roof through PVC pipe to avoid corrosion. (See photo encaption above.) Lead pipe flashings are common and should be replaced with EPDM dektites (see photo on the right). These are just a few of the common occurrences. In all cases, all dissimilar materials should be avoided when possible. When two dissimilar metals being used together, cannot be avoided, care must be taken to assure that they must not be able to get wet, and a barrier sheet of some sort must separate them.

Treated Lumber - Wet Mortar
Other dissimilar materials such as treated lumber and wet mortar should not come in contact with a Al-Zn or galvanized panel. These materials can also cause premature corrosion of Al-Zn and galvanized products.

Copper Coil
Occasionally your roofing manufacturer will manufacture a panel out of copper coil. When using a copper panel, all fasteners and/or clips should be made of copper or stainless steel. The use of these metals will prevent the copper panel from corroding the clips and/or fasteners.

PAM Sabah Chapter - 34th annual dinner
The Sabah Chapter of Malaysia Architects Association or more professionally known as PAM Sabah Chapter, recently held its 34th Annual Dinner on 15th August 2009 at a leading hotel in the Kota Kinabalu city. “Now Or Never” was chosen as the theme for this year’s dinner, made to serve as a reminder of doing it before it is too late. Colourcoil Industries was proud to be the stage and backdrop sponsor for the grand event, which was an outstanding 14” x 28” stage backdrop of black, and red and a white outlining of major iconic buildings in the State– completed with a catwalk aisle– as the focus of the grand ballroom.

The Guest of Honour for the event was Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Musa Haji Aman, Sabah State Chief Minister, represented by his Deputy Yang Berhormat Datuk Raymand Tan Tsu Kiah who is also the Sabah State Minister of Infrastructure Development. Also present was neighbouring Sarawak Chapter’s Outgoing Chairman, Ar. Ng Chee Wee.

The major highlight of the evening was the installation of the new PAM Sabah Chapter Chairman Ar. Ho Jia Lit and his new committee members, from outgoing Chapter Chairman Ar. Sim Sie Hong and his outgoing committee members.  Among the other highlights was the official book launch by the Guest of Honour on PAM Sabah Chapter’s first book entitled “Architecture In Sabah: Resorts and Hotels” featuring 15 selected resorts and hotels in Sabah. The night ended with lucky draws with many exciting prizes.

Colourcoil Industries wishes to thank the organizers and other members who worked with us in coordinating the setting up of the backdrop and stage and for their continuous support. We wish the new Chairman and his new team a productive and wonderful year ahead.
