corrosion. Not only that, the base metal thickness of the
roof is 0.55mm, which is thicker than normally produced tile
roof. The metal roofing also comes with matching gutter and
metal facia board which is connected to the roof trusses.
Supporting the whole roof are metal frames/trusses that has
been designed by City Top Enterprise Sdn. Bhd. As for the

Here are the
excerpts from our interview with the owner and his wife:
Why did you
decide on this roofing system?
"We wanted a roof that was going to be leak-free and also
one that would last for a long time. Well, metal or rather
steel being the strongest, fits our criteria.
The previous old roof was also metal and it lasted me some forty
years with very little problems. We also did some research
on the internet and found out that full strength 70% PVDF
paint coatings were the best for colour retention. As
for the copper look, my wife felt that a roof with that colour would
certainly give the house a unique and different look.
I think most people who pass
by the house a couple of times will notice the change in
colour shade depending on the time of the day. You know, when our
neighbors
and friends see us, they can't help but mention the roof".
"I suppose a
roof is like the hair on your head. If it looks good, your
house will look good.
Oh, one other thing. Should I decide to sell my house
in the future, I know the value of my house will not
drop as the colour of the roof will still be there, looking
great. The roofing
manufacturer, City Top calls it an "investment grade" metal
roof.
So, now that
you have installed a metal roof, is it very warm in the house?
"Not so. The most important thing is
ensure proper ventilation to get rid of the air trapped
between the roof and the ceiling. If you notice,
the pitch of our roof is quite steep with a large volume of
air. By adding louvers to the Dutch gable-end, the
hot air is no longer trapped and can escape easily. To stop
birds from entering, we also added a wire mesh at
the back of the louvers. Two layers of fiberglass wool insulation were
placed underneath the metal tile
roof to help reduce the heat
and of course to reduce the noise when it rains. Come to
think of it, my old roof did not have any
insulation and It never stopped me from sleeping when it
rained".
Your roof
manufacturer mentioned that you have used a 0.55mm BMT (i.e.
base metal thickness) material for your metal tile roof.
This is thicker than those that are normally
produced. Can you tell us why?
"Roof dents. We have seen many roofs where at the time of
installation, they look great. But soon after, when you get
people servicing the aircon compressors or the Astro
dish, dents can start appearing on the thinner gauge roof because these
workers do not really know where to put their foot. With the
0.55mm BMT material, dents from walking on the roof is no
longer an issue. Have you seen how tough and stiff a 0.55mm
BMT tile profile roof is when compare to the
thinner gauges? In western countries, very often the BMT of
the material can go up to 0.6 or 0.7mm. Of course it costs a
bit more, but we were willing to pay a little extra. And also
with a thicker and stiffer roof, the noise maybe reduced.
Why did you
decide to use light gauge steel trusses to support the roof?
Well, we don't really need to cut down any more trees.
Back then, my old roof was supported by timber trusses. Those
trusses were made from Selangan Batu hardwood. Today, I
don't think it is easy to find such wood and even if you
did, it would probably cost a bomb. Light gauge steel trusses are
great because they are dimensionally stable and they will
not warp or rot. Just make sure the trusses are properly
designed in accordance with the engineering codes and local
by-laws. I also like the fact that the facia board is made
from the same pre-painted steel material as the roof and can
be connected directly to each truss. The strip ceiling also
slots in nicely to the facia board.
We notice
that you have used metal strip ceiling for your eaves. Is
this for aesthetic reasons?
Partly I guess. Most people have tried fiberboards,
plaster boards and what have you. They are great when you
have just installed them, but after a while, visible cracks
will start to appear, particularly along the joints. Put it this way,
with a metal strip ceiling, I know our maintenance will be
minimal. It may cost a bit more to start of with, but in the
long run we will save.

Beautiful Metal Roofs - Shah Alam
Royale Theater
The Shah Alam Royale Theatre, one of the latest landmark in
the capital city, is located at Jalan Persidangan in Section
14, just behind the Grand Bluewave Hotel. It is set to play
a big role in promoting the performing arts in the state
capital of Shah Alam. Construction of the RM43mil complex
started in December 2004 and was completed in July 2008.
The six-storey theatre block was designed along the Malay-Bugis
concept. It is equipped with a main stage with a seating
capacity of 800, easy-to-move stage, conference rooms,
multipurpose hall, cafeteria, exhibition hall, management
office and surau. There are also ample parking for visitors,
including designated parking lots for the disabled.
The theatre provides another venue for the local theatre
productions in the state, besides the MBSA auditorium and
the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre.
The roof is
made from metal shingles each hand crafted and carefully
installed into position. The material chosen is COLOURCOIL®
METALLIC PVF2TM Series in 2 colours, silver and pearl
gold. Obviously the owners knew what they wanted and rest
assured, those colours on the roof are going to last for a
very long time.
