Over
the last two months, we have been receiving comments
from our readers regarding the content in our
newsletter. One question from our reader, "What is the
difference between regular polyester coating and the
super-durable polyester
used for Elite Series?"
In
this issue we will try to answer the above question as best
we can and hopefully, our readers will understand the
difference.
On a
separate issue, we would just like to take this
opportunity to announce that Colourcoil Industries will
be participating in the following exhibition:
ARCHIDEX®
08.
Location: KL Convention Centre, Date: 3 -6 July 2008.
You are
all invited to to our booth. See you there.
Thank you.

Regular Polyester Vs ELITE SeriesTM......the
difference?
Regular
polyester or normal polyester are generally used in
commercial quality (CQ), low quality colour coated steel.
In the case of COLOURCOIL®
ELITE SeriesTM,
the coating is a super-durable polyester coating whereby
colour and gloss levels remains for a much more longer
period
when compared to CQ products exposed outdoors.
The following
are some answers to FAQ's:
-
What is
the difference between normal polyester versus
Super-durable polyester binder?
The drop in the level of gloss
over a period of time from its original gloss level
determines a good/bad polyester (PE). High gloss
retention (gloss doesn’t drop a lot) means super-durable
PE. The faster the gloss drops, indicates faster
chalking rate and film erosion. Basically, as the PE
film gets attacked by UV over time, it degrades and
chalks with the film build getting thinner. This is call
chalking or film erosion process. As the film goes
thinner, the gloss goes lower. Unfortunately, there
isn’t any standard available to specify the gloss
retention of a good/bad PE. Just a relative term...
-
Regular
polyester versus ELITE SeriesTM.
Why is ELITE SeriesTM able
to outlast CQ polyester products in terms of color
fading?
First of all, polyester (PE)
resin contributes to adhesion, hardness, flexibility and
gloss retention (chalking/less UV durable)
predominantly. Color fading however is mainly
contributed by the pigments selection (organic vs
inorganic/ceramic). Good or bad PE can be measured by
the level of gloss retention (lower gloss retention
means faster rate of chalking). If the best pigments
(i.e. inorganic/ceramic) were used in CQ PE resin, the
chalking effect outperforms the color durability of the
good pigment because CQ PE film erodes together with the
pigments. In summary, do not use the best pigments for
CQ PE. Both do not match up. By similar reasoning, there
is also no point in using low quality (organic)
pigments with high quality PE resin. Colour fading will
occur quickly even though chalking resistant is good.
(Take note, pure PE resin is transparent)
-
What
are organic and inorganic pigments?
Organic – synthetic/man-made pigments, bright/vibrant
colors, but poor UV/color
durability, poor heat stability but environmental
friendly.
Inorganic – 2 types; iron oxides pigments and ceramic
pigments (high temperature manufacturing process). Both
are UV/color durable and heat stable. Ceramic pigments
available in variety of blue, green and yellow shade
(from bright to dull) but very expensive. Iron oxides
only limited to earth tone but very cheap.
CQ polyester pre-painted steel - consist of
mixture of organic and inorganic (only iron oxides; too
expensive to use ceramic) pigments. Couple with usage of
low quality polyester binder, the performance of this
paint coating is poor in the areas of colour and
chalking durability. COLOURCOIL® ELITE SeriesTM
- only 100% inorganic pigments
(inclusive of ceramic pigments) are used together with high
quality polyester binder. Hence superior performance in
terms of colour retention, chalking and peeling.
COLOURCOIL®
ELITE SeriesTM
is no ordinary polyester. Unlike the commercial quality (CQ)
pre-painted steel used for metal roofing, ELITE SeriesTM
comes with a 10 year warranty against colour fading,
chalking and delamination as well as a 25 year warranty against
corrosion. Not only that, our warranties are quantifiable.

Technical Presentation at JKR Penang
Colourcoil Industries was
recently invited on the 18th March by JKR (Jabatan Kerja
Raya, i.e. Public Works) Penang to give a technical
presentation on our high performance pre-painted steel for
metal roofing and wall cladding. The seminar was attended by
some 60 people comprising of technical staff from different
departments such as quantity surveyors as well as
architects. Representing Colourcoil Industries were Peter
Wong - commercial manager as well as our Colourcoil
marketing staff, Mashita and Wai Hing. Mashita presented the
first half while Wai Hing presented the second half. For most of the
participants, the seminar proved to be interesting with
plenty of relevant questions with regards to pre-painted
steel for metal roofing. Overall, It was a good seminar for both JKR staff and
our marketing staff.
Special thanks to
Mr.
Sivarajah a/l Muniandy (Ketua Penolong Pengarah) from
Bahagian Pengurusan Korporat and Mr. Abd. Gaffar Bin Abu (Ketua
Penolong Pengarah) from Bahagian Arkitek and Cik Adibah from
