Beautiful Metal Roofs.........Port
Klang Free Zone (PKFZ)
For the month of April,
we would like to feature a short article
on PKFZ where COLOURCOIL® high performance
pre-painted steel were specified and used for the metal
roofs on the buildings.

Port Klang Free Zone or PKFZ is
an integrated 1,000-acre Free Commercial and Industrial Zone
providing facilities for international cargo distribution
and consolidation centre. PKFZ is situated in Port Klang,
adjacent to the port, which was ranked world’s 16th port in
2006 in terms of throughput volume.
The project is a mixed
development comprising manufacturing activities complemented
by amenities designed to facilitate the growth of regional
distribution centres or international procurement centres.
PKFZ has been designed to promote entreport trade and
manufacturing industries involved in producing goods
primarily for export. Gazetted as a Free Zone, PKFZ
incorporates both commercial and manufacturing activities
that are further supported by quality and value-added
services.
Colourcoil Industries would like
to take this opportunity to thank BTA Architects and the
developer's technical staff for giving us an
opportunity to supply our high performance pre-painted steel
products to this project. In this project, various
grades of pre-painted steel and customized colors were selected and specified.
Total quantity of colour coated material supplied by
Colourcoil Industries to this
project exceeded 2500 metric ton.

Is your warranty against colour
fading quantifiable?
COLOURCOIL high performance pre-painted steel comes with
warranties of up to 20 years against colour fading, chalking
and delamination.
In this article we will be focusing on the "colour fading"
warranty issue. What
do we mean when we provide a warranty against colour fading?
Are we saying that the colour will absolutely not fade
within 10 years?
Surely this can't be it, as all colours
fade when exposed to outdoor weathering elements. So, the
real
question is to what degree or rather, how much has the colour faded?
We need a method of evaluation that provides
us with numerical data along with a process to quantify that
data.
Enter the color ruler; a spectrophotometer, and our color
interpretation method; Delta-E.
At Colourcoil Industries, a handheld devise with built-in
software enables us to tell the colour difference between
two samples. The bigger the numerical value, the bigger the
difference. A Delta-E value of 2 is barely noticeable to the
untrained eye.
Quantifiable
Warranty
Warranties
against colour fading, issued by Colourcoil Industries are
all quantifiable with the figure Delta-E. These figures have
been determined using a combination of accelerated
weathering tests as well as continued outdoor testing
carried out in some of the harshest environments around the
world.
To view what
the Delta-E limits with regards to our warranty against
colour fading, these figures maybe seen in our
specifications or
technical data sheets for each of our high performance
pre-painted steel products.
The next time
you specify the colour coated steel material for your metal
roofing project or ask for a warranty, make sure that you know what the
warranty is about and if the warranty is against colour
fading, make sure it is quantifiable. For more information
on Delta-E, please look at the article below.

Quantifying Colour Difference......Delta-E
Since the day we could reproduce color, graphic arts
professionals have been evaluating color. Certainly we can
all visually evaluate color to determine its accuracy, but
the statement, “It looked OK to me,” is tough to sell to a
customer. We need a method of evaluation that provides
us with numerical data along with a process to quantify that
data.
Enter the color ruler; a spectrophotometer, and our color
interpretation method; Delta-E.
The Tools
A
spectrophotometer is a device that measures color and can
give the results of the measurements in a format known as
L*a*b* or, more simply, Lab. L*a*b* is a three-dimensional
color space where L* is the luminance or black-to-white
component of the sample, and a* and b* are the color
components of the sample. If a* and b* are both zero, we
have a neutral color.
Now, if you take two colors, measure them with your
densitometer and plug the L*a*b* values into the following
formula:
ΔE = [(L1 - L2)2
+ (a1 - a2)2 + (b1 - b2)2]1/2
The
resulting number is referred to as Delta-E, (often replaced
with the symbol
ΔE) or the color difference.
There is no
need to calculate the formula manually, as most devises can
calculate
can report Delta-E differences.
There are no hard and fast rules for Delta-E accuracy
requirements in the printing process, but there are some
simple guidelines. A Delta-E value of 2.0 is assumed to be
barely perceptible to most people.
Therefore at
Colourcoil Industries, all produced pre-painted coils are
colour checked with a spectrophotometer against the master
sample to ensure that the Delta-E value is less than 2. Any
readings exceeding such value, will then require a check
with the eyes to see if there are any visible difference in
colour. And if there is a visible difference, the
pre-painted coil will be treated as reject.
Valuable Help
Delta-E
is a valuable tool that can be
used to determine color accuracy in the manufacturing of pre-painted
steel as it assist us in our quality assurance process as well as our
purchasing practice.
