1 BORNEO.....customized gold colour dome
A mixed development project strategically located in Sabah on 23.3 acres of prime land along Jalan Sulaman Highway, adjacent to University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) with close proximity to the state and federal administrative centres as well as mega townships and housing estates. Although still under construction, the hypermall should be completed by the first half of 2008.

The dome shown on the left belongs to the unit purchased by car rental & fleet management company, Angkatan Hebat Sdn Bhd who has acquired the 35,077 sqft of Autocity at 1 Borneo hypermall.

In line with Angkatan Hebat's corporate color, the owners insisted that the developer construct a metal dome in gold color. The task of coming up with a color and coating system was assigned by the architect to Colourcoil Industries. The developers, unit owners and architects insisted on a PVDF based coating system as they wanted a roof that will last a long time giving minimal maintenance. For Colourcoil, this means developing a metallic finish PVDF coating system with a 20yr warranty against color fading & chalking for the clients. (This gold color is not a standard color in Colourcoil's color charts but rather a customized color developed for the client based on their  performance requirements). 

After coming up with a few samples, the client agreed to adopt the rich yellow color with a metallic finish. As yellow color pigments are not as UV (ultra-violet) resistant as other ceramic pigments, a 3-coat paint system where the final finishing coat is another layer of PVDF clear coat with UV absorber was proposed to the client.

The client readily accepted our proposal. The picture on the left shows the completed dome in the rich gold tone for which the buyer of the unit, the developer and architect were very pleased with.

Normal international accepted standard is 2+2 system but this very much depends on the level of performance the clients are looking for. Generally, for very bright colors, pigment degradation under UV can sometimes be a problem. Hence, the reason for a 3 coat system. As a property owner, a designer or a developer, always consult with the pre-painted steel manufacturer to confirm that the color coated material meets with the intended performance requirements.
