In our previous newsletters, we featured articles on colour change and how it
is measured as well as how pigments in paint coatings affect the performance
of pre-painted steel for metal roofing and the wall cladding industry. In
this issue, we will discuss on the number pre-painted steel coating systems
that are offered by downstream metal roof & wall cladding manufacturers.
I would like take this opportunity to announce
that this issue will be the last for me as team leader & editor. However I
will still be in the committee to contribute ideas. The e-newsletter committee
have not decided as to who will take over my post however, we will announce this in
our next issue.
With this, I would like to thank our

There are many
pre-painted steel coating systems offered by downstream metal roofing
manufacturers but unfortunately many specifiers or end-users do not pay much
attention to such detail. As an end-user or specifier, attention should be
given to the pre-painted steel coating systems as this too will determine
the long-term performance of your metal roof. The worldwide accepted
coating system for metal roofing and wall cladding is known as a 2+2 coating system consisting of the following
coatings:

Why are manufacturers offering 2+1 or
1+1 coating systems? Due to the competitive nature of the metal roofing and wall
cladding business, a large number of low-end manufacturers are trying to
reduce cost and one of the ways is to reduce primer coatings. The result is lower
quality or commercial quality products where medium to long-term problems
(i.e. corrosion) are eventually passed on to the end-user.
(Take note that not all 2+2 systems will
give you the high performance you maybe looking for,
such as colour retention and chalking, as this will
depend on the quality of the paint formulation used for
the top coat)
