Volume 2, Issue 1

Editor's Note

Once again, Chinese new year is just around the corner and for this festive season, our IT department has decided to design a title block to get our readers in the festive mood.

In our previous issue, we wanted to let our readers understand that colour change can be measured. As colour fading will happen on any painted surface due to weathering elements, it is important to check with your metal roofing manufacturer as to how fast the roof colour will fade. We advise you to take your time to study and compare material specifications.

On behalf of Colourcoil Industries, the e-newsletter committee would like to wish our Chinese readers,

"HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR"
&
"GONG XI FA CAI"

Thank you.

What does it take?
What does it take to manufacture high performance pre-painted steel (i.e. also known as colour coated steel) for the metal roofing & wall cladding industry?

From a technical point of view, it is a combination of process and paint quality. Simply put:

Colourcoil Industries is proud to be the first and only manufacturer in the Asia-Pacific region to use the latest state-of-the-art infrared (IR) curing technology. Our pre-painted steel finishes are brilliant; smooth and blemish-free with no pinholes that may trap dirt, etc.

Colourcoil® high performance pre-painted steel are only coated with proprietary IR, custom formulated, high quality lead-free paint coatings. When cured using Infra-red technology, they exhibit excellent colour retention and film durability properties. (Read the next article to find out how paint quality can affect the long term performance of your roof).

How can Coloucoil high performance pre-painted steel benefit you when it comes to metal roofing?

Did You Know..........?
All paint coatings contain two primary ingredients - resin and pigment. The long-term performance of exterior coatings is dictated by resin strength and the correct choice of pigmentation. You simply cannot have one without the other. The right combination will ensure a super-durable coating.

The resin's primary functions are to provide adhesion, flexibility, hardness, moisture and chemical resistance, and resistance to U-V light.

The pigment provides the colour of the coating. The right pigment is critical in formulating a coating that resists fading, another important property of the pigment.

What's the differences in pigment types? Pigment used in exterior metal coatings fall into three classifications. Here are the dictionary definitions of these three types - and their meanings as used in the paint industry:

Dictionary definitions:   Paint industry definitions:
or•gan•ic\or-'gan-ik: of, relating to, or containing carbon compounds   Organic pigments: comprising of a class of pigments that may have good - but usually not the ultimate durability. Just as the curtains in your living room can be expected to fade with time, so can the organic pigments used in coatings. It generally costs less to use organic pigments.

in•or•gan•ic\in-or-'gan-ik: being, or composed of matter other than plant or animal: MINERAL   inorganic pigments: pigments that are synthetic or naturally occurring which do not contain carbon compounds. The majority of these colorants provide excellent long-term performance. The exception is carbon black. Their higher performance usually comes at a higher cost than organic colorants.

ce•ram•ic\ce-'ram-ik: of or relating to any product made essentially from a nonmetallic material by firing at high temperatures.   ceramic pigments: named after their original use in ceramic products, these complex inorganic pigments are made from metal oxides synthesized at molten metal temperatures. The most colour-stable pigments available today, they offer unparalleled resistance to heat, light, chemical attack and higher solar reflectance. These attributes make them ideal to use in the highest quality exterior coatings to assume long- term colour retention even after decades of weathering. Higher costs is usually associated with their higher performance.

(Take note that low quality or commercial quality pre-painted steel generally uses low cost resins and organic pigments containing lead in their paint formulation, hence, colour fading and chalking will occur in a very short time span).

COLOURCOIL® high performance pre-painted steel paint coatings are manufactured using only high quality resins and lead-free  inorganic/ceramic pigments. So, if you are concern about the colour performance of your next metal roofing project as well as the environment, check out COLOURCOIL® high performance pre-painted steel that comes with full product specifications.
