In November, the
committee decided to
give Colourcoil e-news
readers a break, hence no
publication. However due to
the up and coming festive
season, the committee felt
it would be appropriate to
come out with a December
issue. Just for this
December issue, we
have re-designed our title
block to try to put our
readers in a festive mood.
On behalf of Colourcoil
Industries, the committee
members and I would like
to wish our readers,
"Merry Christmas
&
Happy New Year "
For those who have to drive
long distances during the
holidays, take good care and
drive safely. Last but not
least, avoid consuming any
alcohol if you plan to
drive.
Thank you.

Colour
Metal Roofs -
Pre-painted steel
material
Before
we purchase a car, most of us would
want to examine the
engine and other
components specifications. Hence,
the same would apply, when we intend
to purchase or specify a metal roof
or wall cladding.
During the selection of a suitable
roof profile, It is of utmost
importance that a study be made into
the type of pre-painted steel
material required for your metal
roofing project. Failure to properly
specify the actual pre-painted steel
material used for the downstream
manufacturing of metal roofing or
wall cladding will affect the long
term colour performance of the metal
roof.
For a true
"investment-grade" metal roofing or
wall cladding, specify
COLOURCOIL®
high performance pre-painted steel.
Our high performance colour coated
steel cured with our
state-of-the-art infra-red
technology, comes in new and
exciting colours with warranties of
up to 20 years against colour
fading, chalking and delamination
and and 25 years against corrosion.
Not only that, they are completely
lead-free.

Did You
Know..........?
Colour fading affects all painted
surfaces when exposed outdoors. UV
light decomposes paint pigments,
making them permanently lighter. The
degree of colour loss depends on the
amount of UV exposure, the type of
pigment, the type of resin, and the
colour. Hence on pre-painted metal,
colour should be measured only after
removing the dirt and chalk. The
exact procedures are given in ASTM
D2244 and ASTM E308.
Colour
can be described by three factors:
the lightness, the hue and the chroma. The lightness value
indicates the degree of the
lightness or darkness of the colour.
The hue is what colour it is. The
chroma is how intense the colour is.
The colour is commonly measured
using a colour meter with three
values: L, a and b. The change in
the overall colour, described
mathematically, is ΔE (i.e.
delta-E):
ΔE = [(ΔL)2 + (Δa)2
+ (Δb)2]1/2
L -
a -
b - |
The lightness on a scale of
100=white, 0=black
Negative values are green,
positive values are red.
Intensity increases as the
value furthers from 0.
Negative values are blue,
positive values are yellow.
Intensity increases as the
value furthers from 0. |
ΔE
values are the units described in
Colourcoil's warranties as colour
difference. For example, a colour
change of 2 in L, 4 in a, and 4 in b
would have ΔE=6. Most people can see
colour differences of ΔE=1 to 2, if
the colours are placed side by side. Colour
differences of ΔE=3 to 5 are
more obvious and can be
remembered.
So,
if you are concern about the colour
performance of your next metal
roofing project, check out

Newspaper Article
- tightening loose specifications
Here
is a clipping from part of a news
article featured in Daily Express (Sabah,
Malaysia) with regards to tightening
of loose specifications.
When it comes down to specifying an
end-user product such as metal
roofing, it certainly makes sense to
specify not only the profile, but
the material as well. By specifying
the proper grade of pre-painted
steel required for your metal
roofing project, you will avoid any
misunderstanding which may result in
the supply and installation of
inferior quality products.
